Professional Experience
Galen commenced his career with DSTO, conducting research in unmanned aerial systems, image processing and trajectory optimisation. His work contributed to early advancements in autonomous flight and Defence related sensing technologies. During this period, he also supported engineering education through tutoring and assessment at the undergraduate level. Galen completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering at the Australian National University, specialising in vision aided aircraft navigation and autonomous guidance systems. His research advanced the integration of visual sensing with navigation algorithms and contributed to the broader field of autonomous flight. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Galen focused on precision aircraft navigation, optimisation and air transport management for Defence and commercial aviation. His work included development of advanced guidance algorithms, research into image processing techniques, aircraft conflict resolution modelling, contribution to intellectual property development and engagement with Defence, aviation and research stakeholders. Galen spent eight years in senior engineering and technical leadership roles supporting the development of advanced electro optic and weapons related Defence technologies. His achievements included leading the design, development and integration of remote weapon stations and subsystems, managing multidisciplinary engineering teams across R&D and production environments, providing technical leadership for sovereign capability development, and contributing to the delivery of a remote weapon station selected for integration into the Australian Army’s Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle program. In 2019, Galen joined Nova Systems, leading systems engineering activities for emerging Defence capabilities. His responsibilities included requirements development and systems architecture, project management and engineering governance and preparation of capability proposals supporting Defence innovation initiatives. Since 2020, Galen has provided specialist consulting services to the Department of Defence, supporting maritime directorates and Navy capability programs. His responsibilities have encompassed engineering governance, technical evaluation, capability strategy development and stakeholder engagement across Defence and industry.
